Summary:
On Friday, September 22nd, there was a 30 minute shootout possibly involving a “bazooka”, grenades, and assault rifle in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. It is unclear at this point whether the shootout was between the Gulf Cartel, and a competitor or the result of a police/army raid. It is thought by the author at this point, that members of the Zetas were involved. According to this report, outside the house, that was the scene of the shootout, was found more than a hundred AK-47 shell casings, and an imprint from a supposed grenade detonation. The house was located in the wealthy Madero neighborhood of Nuevo Laredo. The house had several late model SUVs parked there, along with one that appeared to be armored. Another armored SUV was found nearby that was apparently abandoned in the course of the shoot out.

Analysis:
As you probably know, the violence in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico has been growing. There has also been reporting of members of MS-13 working for the Gulf Cartel, which has a major presence here. An interesting aspect of this article, which isn’t explored by the author, is that in general the Mexican army does not use AK variant rifles. Their main service rifles are the HKG3 and the M-16, If there were a shoot out between Mexican government forces and the Cartel, I would expect there to be (G3)7.62x51mm and (M-16)5.56x45mm casings found in addition to the (AK)7.62x39 or (AK)5.45x39, although the modern AK variants use the standard NATO 5.56x45. Anyway the point is, I would expect there to be more than just AK shell casings. So, this fact points to a shoot out between criminal organizations.
