Summary:
In 2002, Brenda Paz, a former MS-13 member, was arrested on federal charges stemming from her involvement in the killing of Javier Calzado in 2001.  She agreed to enter the federal witness protection program and testify against MS-13.  She testified that Calzado, who was 21 at the time of his murder, was killed so her group could steal the tires and wheels from his car.  After testifying, Paz was sent out of the state by the federal relocation program.  Shortly thereafter, she left the program and returned to Virginia because she missed her friends.  On July 23, 2003, a pregnant Brenda Paz was found dead along the banks of the Shenandoah River after being stabbed 13 times and her head almost severed from her body.  Two MS-13 members have since been convicted of her murder.

Analysis:
Like any crime organization, testifying against it can be very hazardous to one’s health.  MS-13 is notorious for killing its former members for even trying to leave the gang, let alone testifying against it.  Apparently Ms. Paz didn’t understand the consequences of testifying against her old gang as she willingly left the witness relocation program and returned to an area where she could be recognized.   In addition, MS-13 is known for its torture methods.  With her pregnant body having been stabbed 13 times and nearly decapitated; a message was sent to others who may be considering testifying in court.
