Summary:
Authorities are reporting increased coordination between MS-13 Cliques in Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and New York. In a confidential letter sent out earlier this month from the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Illinois, "MS-13 is attempting to become a unified criminal enterprise operating under one leadership." Additionally, federal law enforcement officers assert, the gang is adopting tactics used by major Mexican and Colombian drug-trafficking groups.
Analysis:
The unification or attempted unification of the various cliques of MS-13 is something that has predicted by msthirteen.com for some time. With out any details on how the U.S. Attorney arrived at their assessment, it is hard to evaluate it. However, questions remain about MS-13 unification. Who will lead it? How will discipline be enforced? What would be the benefits to unification? Will this make the gang more or less threatening? After all, the current decentralized nature of the gang makes it difficult to suppress or disrupt.
There has been reporting for some time on the collaboration between MS-13 and the Zetas, a Mexican mercenary/smuggling organization. It was only a matter of time before the cross-pollenization of tactics and techniques occurred. Expect this trend to continue.
